The urbanisation of Verdemar is a residential complex situated in Villamartin, Orihuela Costa. It is about 8kms South of the coastal town of Torrevieja on the Costa Blanca in South East Spain.
The construction started in 1988 and the first properties were completed early in 1989. It was constructed by the company which owns the Villamartin, Las Ramblas and La Finca golf courses which now goes under the name of Trivee. There are many properties consisting of a mix of apartments, bungalows and town houses. In the early years it was mainly used as a second home / holiday area with a few permanent residents but over the years the emphasis has changed and there is now a much larger proportion of permanent residents. There has always been a mix of nationalities on the complex with the majority of owners being from the UK but with an ever growing number of owners from the Scandinavian countries and a few from Germany and elsewhere.
The complex is built around a stream and a number of green areas. The stream holds a variety of fish and is also home to some terrapins. There are two swimming pools both of which have childrens pools attached. At the top of the complex is a fountain pool which has a number of metal animal sculptures. This was originally built to be a replica of a structure in Barcelona designed by Gaudi.
There have been many changes to the surrounding area over the years and now there are many amenities close by. When first opened in 1989 there were very few local shops and restaurants.
